How to Style the Perfect Side Table
A side table is small, but it's rarely empty — which means it's one of the easiest surfaces in a room to get wrong. Too little on it and it looks forgotten. Too much and it becomes a catch-all for whatever's nearby. Here's how to strike the balance.
1. Start with the shape of the table itself
Before adding anything, look at the table you're working with. A piece like the Curve Side Table already has a soft, sculptural presence — it doesn't need to be filled to feel complete. With a table like this, less styling actually shows off the design better than a crowded surface would.
2. Follow the rule of three
Three objects, varied in height, tend to look more intentional than two or four. A lamp, a small stack of books, and one object with texture — a candle, a small bowl — is usually enough. It leaves room for the table's own shape to still be visible.
3. Keep one object with a function
A side table should still work as a side table. Somewhere on it, leave room for a drink, a phone, or a remote — a table that's fully styled but unusable defeats the purpose. Function first, decoration second.
4. Match the mood of the room, not just the table
The objects you choose should feel like they belong in the room, not just on the table. A warm-toned lamp works differently in a minimalist living room than in a cozy reading corner — think about the space around the table before finalizing what goes on it.
5. Leave visible wood or surface showing
Whatever you place on top, make sure some of the table's actual surface stays visible. It's a small detail, but it's what keeps a side table looking styled rather than simply used as storage.
A side table doesn't need much to make an impression — often, the table itself is doing most of the work. Choose a few objects that respect its shape, and let the rest be negative space.
